First starting out on my own after college, I wanted to get away from the “student” look of my humble furnishings. My numerous books, about 250, stacked against the four walls of my bedroom were not exactly the sophisticated look I was aspiring for. Since I didn’t have much money to spare, I took the free standing plastic shelf I had been using as clothing armoire with baskets, and set it up in my apartment living room as a bookshelf. This lasted about a day when suddenly I heard a large “snap” and “crash” as the plastic shelves cracked in half under the weight of the heavy volumes. That’s when decided to buy the strongest shelves I could afford to hold the many books I had accumulated as a student. Good quality wood bookshelves were out of my budget at that time so I turned to metal storage shelving. Little did I realize I was on the cutting edge of the contemporary industrial look in interior design.

Having moved several times and up in the world, I still have that original metal storage shelving, along with several other units I bought in the past fifteen years. I’ve used them for storing everything from books, to colorful bins of baby clothes and toys, to gardening equipment and power tools. My metal storage shelving has served me well over the years and I expect it will continue to be utilized in some fashion or another. As my children graduate and go off to college, leaving boxes of childhood memories behind for me to hold on to, those metal storage shelves will continue to be the keepers of some of the most special parts of my life.
