What to Insure

Usually you can arrange to insure any or all of your home contents against the event of fire, damage, burglary or any other loss. The policy will usually have a limit and an excess. The limit will refer to any individual item over a pound value such as £1,500 or £2,000. This means that if someone leaves their £10,000 diamond ring on your window sill and a thief sees it, breaks in and grabs it you will only get the £1,500 rather than the full £10,000.

If you do have specific items that you want to insure which are of significant worth eg a big plasma screen, or a top quality hi-fi system then

you can often put these in the policy when you

agree it with the insurance company.

One of the most awkward things to do though, is not to cover the big ticket items but to cover all the small-value things you own. If you had a fire, just think of the number of small things you’d lose which have cost many pounds over the years. Books, clothes, shoes, lamps, rugs, pictures, ornaments – the list is endless. If you can’t remember what you’ve got, you may not be able to claim for everything.

You can photograph your rooms and keep the photos

safe somewhere (with a relative or at work or in an office) so that you have some record of the things that you own. Also, a videotape record sweep of your house, garden and sheds can be very valuable in recording exactly what you’ve got, opening all the cupboards and draws as you go to show what’s in there. It may take seconds but could save you many many pounds (and troubled remembering) should the worst happen.

Be prepared – because proper preparation is a practical priority!

Note: none of the above should be construed as a recommendation for any company nor as financial advice.

Green House Questions?

My Mother just added a 12×12 sq. ft green house to their new home and is excited to start using it. She plans on growing a combination of flowers and vegetables inside (possibly small trees/shrubs as well). I was curious if anyone was aware of a good book or website for gardening inside a green house helping to specify what and when to plant. She plans on transplanting the flowers into a garden behind the new house eventually. She does have a pretty green thumb already, so something beyond the absolute basics would be excellent.

There is a book called Greenhouse Gardener’s Companion that has all the info you want and also go to greenhousegarden.com. I grow flowering maple(Abutilon hybridum) which do very well in a greenhouse and easy to care for, it will bloom continuously if you go to About.com and do a search on it you will get photos and lots of info. Good luck.
